Perspective From The Pantry: Personal Decision-Making/Using Resources

“There’s nothing to eat!” I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard that statement exasperatedly yelled from our kitchen by one of my kids. And yet, the fridge has eggs, sandwich meat, veggies, cheeses; the pantry has rice, grains, flours, and mixes.

It’s not that there’s nothing, there’s plenty. They just weren’t seeing how the pieces could come together. They didn’t see eggs, fresh spinach, and cheese combined created a delicious omelet. Or a box of instant rice, some leftover chicken, and a little stock making a quick, healthy, and satisfying meal.

When we begin a project, whether it’s working on a life goal or starting a new division at the plant, we need to assess what we need. And often, like my kids staring in the pantry, we’re looking for the finished product rather than the starting ones. We need a fresh set of eyes, a new perspective.

If you want to get in better shape you don’t have to join a gym. Look in your closet first. Put on your sneakers, grab some shorts and a t-shirt and start walking. Why invest in a gym membership before you create the habit of exercising. Use what you have before you invest in something else.

Perspective is important. We understand that sometimes our clients are so close to the situation they need a fresh set of eyes and ideas to help bring perspective into focus.

If I took my family out to dinner every time I heard, “there’s nothing to eat!” shouted from the kitchen, their college fund would have been depleted before they graduated high school. It’s important to assess your needs and identify your resources; what you have now, and what you will need in the future. This is part of making good decisions.

By the way, I taught all three of my children to cook. I didn’t just show them what was available, I taught them how to use it. And that was a good decision for me.
