Focus on the Process

Is there anything more frustrating than dieting for a whole day, and not seeing significant weight loss the next morning when you step on the scale?

Yes, the example is extreme, but so often we stop moving towards a goal because our expectations of what progress looks like are unrealistic.

Try a Different Approach

Instead of saying, “I want to lose 20 pounds over the next 4 months,” trade it for something like, “I want to get healthier.”

You can still do all of the things that you might do to lose 20 pounds, but the mindset  focused on feeling better — rather than focused on a number — will be more motivating. The results will likely lead to a healthier lifestyle with the bonus of real weight loss.

What Do You Desire?

Weight loss is an easy example, but these simple thoughts can be applied to just about any desire.

  • Focus on the process - showing up, creating good habits, making small adjustments along the way. Think of it as a practice you’re applying to your life as it is right now, rather than a temporary effort with an expiration date.
  • Celebrate the small wins - “I didn’t want to get up and walk, but I did.” -- “I made a healthier choice at the coffee shop this morning.” -- “I put $10 more in my savings account this paycheck.”
  • Don’t beat yourself up. Give yourself grace when you fall off the path, but don’t quit, keep at it with grit. Get back on the path.
  • Measure your progress by YOU, not others. You are unique, and so is your journey; no one walks it but you.  Compare your progress to what or where you were before you started.

What have you stopped trying to accomplish? Can you identify a simpler process to begin again, instead of a goal to reach?

Apply a little grit and a touch of grace, and start making progress.
